Karen A. Pelczarski is a partner of the firm and an experienced trial
lawyer with a varied practice that includes business, commercial, tort
and employment litigation, representing both plaintiffs and defendants.
She joined the firm in 1987, and has successfully represented clients in
medical malpractice and personal injury cases, employment discrimination
and sexual harassment cases, securities fraud and RICO cases, and all
types of business and employment disputes. Many of her cases involve
dispute in closely held or family businesses. She has also done extensive
appellate work before the Rhode Island Supreme Court and First Circuit
Court of Appeals.
Her clients have included individuals, partnerships, local companies,
and large national corporations. Ms. Pelczarski has handled many complex
commercial cases in the federal and state courts of both Rhode Island
and Massachusetts, including construction litigation, contract disputes,
disputes involving real estate and partnerships, class actions, and
multi-state litigation. She accepts referrals for appellate work in all
areas of civil litigation.
She has been active in the Rhode Island Bar Association, serving on
its Superior Court Bench/Bar
Committee. She is a member of the Litigation Section of the
American Bar Association and has been a member of the Rhode Island Bar Foundation
since 1997.
She has been listed as one of the best commercial litigators in the country in the annual editions of The Best Lawyers in America since 2005.
The Best Lawyers in America is the oldest lawyer rating lawyer rating publication in the United States and inclusion is based on peer reviews.
Chambers USA selected her for inclusion in their directory of leading
business lawyers in America for 2005-2006, 2006-2007, and 2007-2008,
identifying her as one of the premier business litigation attorneys in
Rhode Island and referencing her appellate work. She was also
recognized as a Rhode Island and New England Super Lawyer for
2007. In November 2003, the Providence Monthly recognized her as a
lawyer and community activist "to watch". In 2000, she
was selected for lifetime membership in Who's Who of American Law.
Ms. Pelczarski has been actively involved in leadership roles in many
civic and cultural organizations. She was a co-founder and is the former
President of The Music School, Inc., a community music school in Rhode
Island which administers a wide variety of music instruction and
programs, and provides scholarships and programming for underprivileged
and at risk children in public schools, housing authorities and juvenile
detention centers. Since the school's merger with the Rhode Island
Philharmonic, she has served as a director of the Rhode Island
Philharmonic, a member of its Executive Committee, and as chairperson of its
Educational Committee. She is on the Board of Directors of the Greater
Providence Chamber of Commerce and currently serving as Secretary of
that organization and also a member of the President's Council at
Providence College. She is a former President of the Providence
Maritime Heritage Foundation and also served on the Advisory Committee
of the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Institute of
Architects. In 1999, she received a Public Service Achievement
Award from Common Cause of Rhode Island.
Ms. Pelczarski received her Bachelor’s degree with honors from
Wellesley College. She received her law degree from Boston College Law
School, attending the University of Pennsylvania during her final year
of law school.
